From 17 December 2021 to 13 January 2022, AFI Style IP Center and NFT Asia’s leading digital art gallery CryptoArt. Ai will be hold a NFT Pioneer Digital Art Exhibition “A Reset Scene Narrative? ｜2022 Trendy Collector”at WHY ART SPACE in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, featuring digital artworks by 16 artists from three continents.
“Digital Art” in academic terms refers to artworks created or processed using digital technology as a creative medium, and refers to the various practices that have been practiced since the 1970s since computer language, internet scenes and multimedia presentations, including but not limited to images, video, text, audio, installations, etc. On this level, digital art is actually placed in the vein of new media art, but with clearer linguistic boundaries. Driven by the computing power of computers and the development of electronic interfaces, digital art has developed into ‘virtual reality’, ‘augmented reality ‘virtual reality’, ‘augmented reality’, ‘audiovisual art’, ‘generative art’ or ‘interactive art’, digital photography and AI art, all of which are based on technology. NFT digital art is one of these derivatives, and to a considerable extent overlaps with web art in terms of the established ways in which it is stored, displayed and reproduced.
In this sense, when we look at NFT digital art, it’s beyond the image, a few short frames of video or a piece of music, but the ‘code’ behind the presentation of the image/sound as well as a data-base. It is the ‘code’ behind and the ‘thing’ based on data make NFT art possible. Also we can not abandon the relationship between art, exhibition and the scene where it takes place. Contemporary art leaving the physical canvas and traditions inevitably and more directly depends on the context in which it is presented. The context of NFT art include block-chain contract, and the philosophy of “cyberspace”.
The “cyberspace” has been widely practised and discussed by artists, theorists, curators and pioneering academic institutions since the 1970s. The emergence of the NFT is not an entirely new proposition, it can be traced back to imagination that a virtual community that breaks the boundaries of space and time. In this scenario, NFTs show emotion, perception of values through screens of computers and portable devices. From this perspective, NFT is not fundamentally different from traditional art. What’s special to NFT art is the transformation of value and content from the traditional art to the philosophy of the cyberspace in narrative logic.
Therefore, we might as well weaken the specificity of ‘NFT digital art’ and return to the core essence of artistic creation — modernism. After that, the core of art creation is audience- to understand what the NFT digital artists’ intention? And how the narrative of the content is developed through community, thus building a worldview based on digital dimensions.
The theme of the digital art section of the exhibition “2022 Trendy Collectors” is to explore the digital metaverse, a compound word consisting of meta (beyond) + verse (universe), literally means “another universe beyond the real one”, which is the so-called “parallel world”, and the basis of this parallel world is “cyberspace”.
Among the artists presented in this exhibition, Andreas Ivan, who extracts symbols and emphasises the transmission of social emotions, Jonathan Nash, who builds interactive practices based on mobile social media and explores the juxtaposition of real and imaginary spaces, and Marc O’Matic, who uses the language of animation to construct the ecology of the future planet and the demise of “man”. Marc O’Matic and MrMisang, who use critical realism to present the fate of humanity in post-modern society, and Adam Martinakis and Rolzay Zilvinkis who also use 3D digital language to explore the relationship between human “existence” and the spiritual realm. LOXEL refers to the future completion of human “avatar” in the era of the symbiosis of reality, and Qin Qin, who uses computer programming to present human existence and consciousness awareness above the number of dimensions in a highly rational way. Ouchhh directly places “code/data” in the “object” and uses computer autonomy to counter the “human” as the core of its creation. Pak constructs new rules of the game and cultural consensus in the NFT scene. In all artists are still exploring the relationship between human, social and physical environment, and the social relationship.
In this light, what are we looking forward to in the digital meta-verse? Is it the reconfiguration of the relationship between human beings and society, or is it the realisation of the utopian vision that has been mentioned and developed for two millennia in the cyberspace scenario? However, as mankind once again contemplates and fantasises about a ‘utopian society’, it is also important to consider what is going on in our present world, and we should never neglect the present moment.
